2022 Comp
The compensation package for the next year is released in early December. In the one-on-one meeting, the manager gives the letter, and employees can talk about this. That is the moment that I look forward to the most.
Even though sharing comp is prohibited, people share their data on Blind. It was impossible in South Korea, where less than 200 engineers are. Using enough sample data, people could calculate the company’s coefficient multiples to MRP (Market reference price). So, people can know how the company’s comp is competitive and whether they are fairly compensated. Sometimes, it makes people leave the company when they think it is absurd.
I haven’t ever been dissatisfied with the result. Even when I was a police officer, I thought my salary was fair enough. It must be because I was paid higher than others of the same age/industry. In MTV, however, my TC is lower than the average people working at FAANG. I guess it will make me unhappy.
Nevertheless, It would be a strong motivation rather than just discouraging. The important thing is to prove myself diligently, actively, and loudly.
100-day vacation
60-days have left since I arrived in the US. Friends in Korea can’t visit the US due to the covid situation. The Korean government quarantines overseas entrants for 10-days which is longer than their vacation.
Instead, I considered a 100-day vacation in Korea. Korean New Year is the 1st of February. I can go back after having time with family. But, It would affect my work performance. So, it is still hard to make a decision.
Golf club
There are some golf clubs in the Bay Area. One of them is one mile far from my office. I enrolled in the beginner course, and today was the first day of the class. I got to know that Golf is a complex sport.
In all sports, posture, and grab are the most important thing. Getting used to them also needs time and practice. My goal is not to give up and attend the class. Since I’m not good at any sports, I don’t think I can do better than others.
K-POP
I didn’t know that K-POP is so prevalent in the US. Yesterday, my coworker tried to book a ticket for the TWICE concert in Oakland. He finally failed to get a VIP ticket since there were 2000+ more waiting people.
They asked me about K-POP about the topic, and I said I don’t know well because I’m in my 30s. Another person said I would know ‘girls generation’ and ‘wonder girls’. I was amazed that they knew the previous idols and their songs.
In Trivia, one of the questions was about the most successful Korean TV show, and the answer was ‘squid game’. I think Korean culture is in a golden age which is good for Koreans in the US.
